An ideal EMR implementation approach for 2-5 physicians group offices
Practical EMR Implementation: Live case study.
1. Group Practice transformed them completely from paper based to paperless in 1 month.
2. Upgrade the old pms or billing software from unix to Web based PMS system for multi location use and charge capture facility through PDA for real time billing. or alternate chose and integretad PMS and EMR system.
3. Purchase an EMR which has flexibility for HL7 interface. Physicians can keep using dictation services and transcription were imported into the EMR directly
4. Establish patient demographics interface with the Hospital PMS system, lab company and Pharmacies so that all systems can talk to each other.
5. Established the hospital system interface so that hospital system can talk to the EMR as well as PMS to share demographics.
6. Established Electronic interface with quest and labcorp to send all labs into the EMR directly.
7. Installation of fax server and Exchange server, enabled all incoming faxes in digital form transformed the practice completely paperless for incoming data.
8. Scanning devices from fujitsu was used for old paper records to be scanned and most important we did not scan everything. Doctors assigns the required document to the dedicated EMR assistant in the practice which are really required to be scanned, rest all the document gets trashed. Saved tons of space in storage by using smart approach.
9. Electronic RX facility in EMR to send all prescription to the pharmacy electronically or through electronic fax.
10. Patient Portal allowing patients to schedule their appointments online, short visits (web visits) online through secure messaging and most important pay their portion of payment either in advance or after receiving statement using online facility.
11. Establish self service kiosks and improving patient portal so that all patient can access their records online. All referring physicians can refer the patient using our website as well as download their consults or transcription using our website.
It take months to completely transform the practice and at least to see the Return on investment , but amazingly what should be motivating physicians to continue the effort towards the entire process is realization of the results after each step and the confidence in their vendor who integrated all the pieces together for them.
